How to Save Our Planet project in October last yearOpen and honest: The Hips Don’t Lie singer, 44, appeared on the cover of Glamour UK’s November Digital Issue – an environmental special – and within, she discussed her work with Prince William as well as the adversity she has faced

The unlikely pairing first connected in October 2020 to work on the Duke of Cambridge’s decade-long global environmental competition with a set of A-list judges set to join the show which will see winners handed £1million for an idea to protect the planet.

Sir David Attenborough, who has supported the project from the beginning, is a member of the Earthshot Prize council, who choose the winners.

This year’s winners include projects restoring coral reefs, redistributing unwanted food to the disadvantaged and a scheme battling air pollution.

Judges include actress David Attenborough, Cate Blanchett, Queen Rania of Jordan and Shakira.

She said of the Royal: ‘Seeing Prince William’s passion and how genuinely determined he is to provoke change is very, very inspiring…

‘It’s just incredible to see how committed he is, and all the people at Earthshot are, to make change happen in the world in such a short amount of time…

‘And it’s not impossible. It requires many of us, plenty of commitment and determination, and we need to raise awareness towards that.’

Shakira then revealed her children are the reason she signed up to the Earthshot Prize ‘Seeing them so worried, so concerned about the planet and how they can make this a better place has been so inspiring to me as a mother…

‘As a parent, I want to make sure that they will live in a world that will be better than the one I grew up in.’

Shakira also spoke of confidence and self-doubt ‘Sometimes I project this image of confidence, but in reality, I’m very, very insecure…

‘I feel like I have this duality. It’s weird, because sometimes I feel really empowered that I can do it all, but it never happens without me going through a process of self doubt.’

She also said of her biggest beauty mishap: ‘So I was dying my hair the night before the Super Bowl, with the exact same hair dye that I use every time…

‘And that night, my hair decided to turn black! It was [also] my birthday. It was almost midnight. And of course, the next day I had to be up and ready and perfect and fresh. But no, of course there had to be some kind of drama, especially before the Super Bowl! I was freaking out.’
