“Morning,” he said, taking in the tableau: me on the porch beside David, the movers halfway to their truck, Andrew and Margaret rigid near the steps, the yellow papers fluttering on the hood of my mother’s car.
“What seems to be the issue?”
“Sergeant,” David said, stepping forward with the relaxed confidence of a man who lives in courtrooms. “Thank you for coming. As discussed, I am David Chen, counsel for Miss Gable, who owns this property. These two”—he indicated my mother and brother—“arrived with a moving truck and fraudulent documents produced by a disbarred notary in an attempt to force my client out of her home.”
“That’s a lie!” Margaret burst out. “She tricked my parents. She stole this house. We’re just taking back what’s ours. This is a family matter. You have no right—”
“Ma’am,” Sergeant Miller said calmly, holding up a hand. “We reviewed the deed and court order Miss Gable sent us. The probate case is closed. The property is legally hers. That makes you and your son guests here only with her permission. When she revokes that permission and you remain, it becomes trespassing.”
“We have papers,” Andrew said, voice cracking. He grabbed the fake motion from the hood of the car and waved it wildly. “A lawyer gave us these. He said—”
“We’re familiar with Mr. Peters,” the sergeant said, his tone shifting from polite to very, very flat. “In fact, we’ve been interested in speaking with him again. Presenting forged legal documents in an attempt to gain property you know doesn’t belong to you is fraud. Trying to use those papers to push someone out of their home in front of witnesses? That’s very serious.”
The lead mover, emboldened, stepped up. “Officer, he told us to ignore her, said she was difficult and that he had the legal right to kick her out. That’s the only reason we took the job.”
“We appreciate your cooperation,” Sergeant Miller said. “You gentlemen are free to leave.”
Andrew’s hands balled into fists. For a second, I saw the urge to explode in his eyes. But the flashing lights and the uniform at the end of my driveway did what my childhood tears never could.
They stopped him.
David tilted his head. “Sergeant, my client is prepared to take the next step, but she has one condition.”

It functions as a civil agreement now, but if you violate it, it will support criminal charges.”
Margaret’s voice dropped to a hoarse whisper. “We will never sign that.”
“You will,” David said quietly. “Because if you don’t, my client is prepared to press charges today for conspiracy to commit fraud, attempted theft by deception, and harassment. The evidence includes your cooperation with a known scammer, your presence here with a moving truck, and your presentation of forged documents to me and to these officers. I will deliver all of it personally to the district attorney. You could be facing felony charges. Or you can sign, get in your car, and leave with a warning you do not deserve.”
He slid the document and the pen across the hood toward them.
“You have thirty seconds,” he said gently. “After that, I start making calls.”
Andrew looked at the paper like it was a coiled snake. His jaw worked. He glanced at the cruiser, at the movers’ truck, at me.
For the first time in my life, I saw it in his eyes: not irritation, not dismissive amusement, not that smug, inward tilt.

“Hannah,” he said, almost pleading. “You’d really do this? To your own brother?”
“Apparently,” I said, “I’m finally doing something for myself.”

“Andrew,” she whispered. “Sign.”
He grabbed the pen and scribbled his name hard enough that the page crinkled. Then he shoved it at her. She held it, hands shaking, then wrote MARGARET GABLE in small, neat letters underneath.
David took the page back, scanned it once, then folded it and tucked it into his briefcase like it was nothing more than a routine receipt.
“It’s done,” he said to the sergeant.
Sergeant Miller nodded. “Then as far as the sheriff’s office is concerned, this is a closed incident. Miss Gable, if they return or contact you against your wishes, you call us. Immediately.”
“I will,” I said.
Margaret opened her mouth to say something—apology, accusation, I’ll never know. I stepped back.
“Get out,” I said.

Andrew stalked back to the sedan. Margaret followed, wiping at her cheeks. They got in without another word. The engine roared to life. The car reversed too fast, spray of gravel fanning out, then shot down the long driveway like they could outrun what they’d done.
The moving truck left a minute later, more slowly, the driver giving me a short, sympathetic nod as he passed.
The sheriff’s cruiser rolled away. The flashing lights disappeared. The farmhouse was suddenly quiet again.
Only David and I remained on the porch.
