I looked out at the lights glowing inside, at the faces bent over projects, at the sign with Harold’s name.
“No,” I said. “It’s home now. Not because of the walls. Because of what we built inside them.”
He nodded.
We listened together as one of the saws started up in the back. Not the lonely hum I’d heard that first day, but the steady rhythm of people working side by side.
That night, back in my small living room, I opened my journal and wrote down something Harold used to tell me when a piece didn’t come out the way we planned.
“You can’t rebuild the past, Lucy,” he’d say, wiping sweat off his brow. “But you can build something better from what’s left of it.”
He was right.
We hadn’t brought him back. We hadn’t erased the pain of losing him. But we’d taken the pieces he left behind—wood, machines, his stubborn belief in people—and turned them into something sturdy enough to stand on.
And as long as I could walk down that road in Hale County, Ohio, and hear the saws singing inside that old building, I knew one thing for certain:
