The camera blinked. The neighborhood slept. Somewhere in Northern Virginia a title clerk turned a stamp over in her palm and pressed it into paper for someone else’s dream. No treasure. No secret. Just a place I own legally and fiercely, in a county and a state in a country where the rules are imperfect and often unfair and sometimes, if you insist, they work the way they were written.

The doorbell camera catches my reflection when I leave for work. It catches me when I come home. It caught me the day the FBI took a SOLD sign off my lawn and folded it into the back of a government SUV. It catches my brother sometimes when he visits our parents and walks past my house like a man walking past a church he only goes to on holidays. He doesn’t come up the path. He nods at the camera, once. I nod back through the glass.

The porch light clicks off at midnight on a timer I set the week I moved back in and have never bothered to change. The green blink on the bell keeps its small promise. The house keeps mine. And if anyone ever asks me what the moral of all this is, I say there isn’t one, not the kind you can put on a mug. There is only the map you draw when the story other people handed you stops getting you home—and the moment you arrive on your own porch, key in hand, and the door opens because it recognizes who you are.
