The RIAA first launched the Gold and Platinum Awards Program in 1958 to recognize artists’ achievements in sales.

To reach a gold certification for both singles and albums in the U.S., an artist must reach 500,000 units; 1,000,000 units for platinum; multi-Platinum is 2,000,000 plus; and 10,000,000 to reach diamond.

Since 2013, the streaming of songs in the U.S. counts towards certification of singles with 150 streams being the equivalent of 1 unit sold.

And since February 2016, the RIAA includes on-demand audio and video streams and a track sale equivalent in Gold and Platinum Album Award. The program will count both sales and streams for single and album certifications.
